Daniel Erickson confirms no open beta

#16
I think though that the September beta weekends will accomplish this goal.

I call bs. Stress test weekends IS open beta. Especially when mass invites are sent out.

they dun need to stress test with people.. they can do that with making tonnes of fake clients logging in onto the server and letting each of those fake clients stress as hard as needed.... rather want closed beta.. if they decide to send an invite well would go and do my job there... no point with open... its enough the give a free month for buying the product when it is released..

Besides open beta or stress test is for those who pre-ordered the game or got collectors edition.. case solved.

Quor, every MMO that has ever existed has done stress tests. Fake clients cannot simulate every situation. Also, open beta is a big part of testing as well.

I'm afraid your a bit mis informed on that one. During one of the many gaming conventions this past summer, a dev did say that nearly everyone who signed up (for testing) would get an invite for the stress test weekends. However, it wont be a true stress test, because stress testers are on a different server than everyone else is (player testing).

Its over rated... more a PR thing I believe.. am sure they got servers that can hold massive amount of clients.. then why test it when it is already bullet proof... test it with keeping letting logins and simulated actions going to see if the program itself breaks down.. and let the true testing finding bugs still remain for those people selected for it to neutralize bugs instead.

Just gotta overload the address or something to see how much it can hold before one player lags horrible or to see how much it takes to make the server crash then go 20% below that cap or something.

Dunno if can bear on starting on a new game though form the day one thing or whatsoever... felt so treated badly by many other games doing that. :/

Yea I hear ya Quor. But stress testing is more than just making sure the servers are stable. Its more for metrics purposes. The amount of logins is completely random as well as the locations of the logins. It does them no good to connect a million fake connections from 127.0.0.1.

Besides, random boots from the servers and moving a quarter of an inch in 5 minutes only to get booted is all part of the stress test fun Big Grin .

I cant afford to pre-order TOR, but I did buy a game that should keep me busy until release.
